I had the most amazing experience a few months back when a client asked me for a maternity session. Of course, I took her up on it right away…but had no clue about her awesome idea! As we sat at Starbucks discussing her session, she informed me that she is a very committed CrossFitter and wanted to incorporate that passion into her maternity pictures! How could I say no? I am always up for trying something new and I really wanted to see what kind of fun we could have at CrossFit 702, right here in Las Vegas!
A few days later, I met up with her at the gym…being a natural light photographer that had only rented lighting equipment at the time, I had nothing on me but my camera and a few lenses! The gym was much like a garage, and those sliding doors were the ONLY thing that saved me! We opened up 2 giant garage doors that let some great light in! And off she went! She just did her thing, lifting more weight at 8 months pregnant than I ever have in my entire life! It was pretty amazing to see!
I started shooting with my 50mm, but quickly changed over to my 28-70 zoom to get better range. My ISO most of the time was 800, I’m bad about shooting at high ISO’s!
I love this shoot so much mostly because it shows how amazing us moms can really be! No, we aren’t all as strong and fit as my client is (although I’d like to be!), but I know without a doubt that every mom has some sort of passion outside her husband and children. I love that we have the ability to be completely dedicated to our family and beliefs and STILL be able to pursue the many other joys in life!
I also love this session so much because it took me out of my comfort zone, A LOT! I mostly shoot families and children and if I did do a maternity session, I never would have imagined it would be this! Stepping outside of comfort zones can sometimes be extremely difficult, but you never know what blessings will come if you don’t try, right? I LOVE these images…my client looks absolutely amazing, strong, and beautiful…exactly what every mother has inside of her!
I also included a few shots of her on our outdoor session…these display the softness and gentleness of a mother, isn’t she beautiful?
