Take a moment and think. How many times has the smallest gesture from someone else completely made your day? A comment on your blog, a quick email or facebook message, or even just a sincere verbal compliment. The result: A huge goofy grin that doesn’t leave your face for hours….all because of something that only took someone less than 30 seconds to do.
Now think about this….how often do you think something nice and keep it to yourself? Maybe you’re like me…..A BLOG STALKER. I am always reading blogs and thinking “Wow, that’s pretty!” or…. “Dang, you go girl”. But 9 times out of 10, I click away without saying a word.
What good are those kind words if you only keep them to yourself?
And why is it that negativity spreads like wild fire? I am just sick, over a recent debacle with an entrepreneur in the photography industry whom I admire greatly. There are others in the industry who disagree with an approach he has and are making sure the world knows it. Speaking your mind is fine, on a subject you feel strongly about. But the time and effort wasted this past week, not only making digs at his approach, but slandering him on a personal level is enough to make me want to shut off social media completely. Okay….I feel as if I have rambled now…. My point is, all this recent commotion has put even more urgency on presenting this challenge. There is no shortage of people putting their negative feedback into words….it’s time to make an effort to do just the opposite.
If you read my Spread your light post, this concept may sound veryyyy familiar. I wanted to take the opportunity to turn the challenge from that post into something bigger…. A month long challenge!
For the entire month of April, I am going to make a conscious effort to verbalize EVERY compliment that crosses my mind.
Because I am so involved in social media….this is going to mostly apply to my activities on Facebook and Twitter. So, to keep myself even more dedicated to it, I am eliminating my use of the “Like” button on Facebook for the duration of this challenge. I am the queen of “liking” and often, I think I translate my whole sentiment into a click of the like button. Convenient….yes, but impersonal.
Of course this will still extend beyond social media, to “real life” as well. Ya know….telling the girl in the grocery store that I like her purse…that kind of thing.
It is a small challenge. But even the smallest gesture can make a difference. I would LOVE for you to join me! If you are going to spread the love along with me for the month of April, leave a comment below letting me know. (See how I’ve already got you practicing that commenting stuff?! Smart, eh?) And invite your friends to join you too!
Being the dog lover that I am, I couldn’t resist closing out with one of my favorite quotes…..

Awesome! What a great idea and I accept the challenge!
Totally awesome idea Kristen! (See what I did right there – I left a comment instead of clicking away!) Love ya!
I usually hold back, so often what I think because sometimes I assume that to others it won’t matter, or they may already know how awesome they are…. (Especially when said people are pretty ‘popular’). But I know the feeling whenever someone compliments something I do, create, or say. Online, or off. I was in the movie theatres, and a girl told me how much she loved how I did my hair. That made my night. Why do we always tell ourselves NOT to say something, when that something could make that persons day, give them confidence when they were insecure, etc?
Love that quote! lol And I love this challenge, they say it takes 21 days to form a habit, so heres to forming a habit of being nice to people!
I’m in =].
Brillant! I’m in!
This is awesome <3 I accept this challenge as well
Awesome challenge (= thanks for the inspiration
love this idea Kristin! I’m too fond of the like button too. I’m in!
I love doing this. Making other people smile makes me smile, too.
This is a fabulous idea!
Great challenge! Just today, I was at Panera for lunch and saw this girl with the cutest dress on. I thought to say, “That’s a really cute dress” to her when she walked past me and back again. But, alas…
Love it! Thanks
I love this!! I’m an avid fan of leaving comments of blog if for no other reason than to spread the love- I leave upwards of 20 a day sometimes. LOVE that you’re encouraging others to do this!!
haha I love this and your work. I believe the photo of the dog at the end is what sold me
This is amazing! I would love to accept the challenge!
Im with ya kristen!
Fantastic! Love this! Thanks for the challenge Kristen! I’m following Shannon on this one, not just liking this post, but commenting as well!
Kristin….i have a little story to add to this. I cannot tell you how many times my friends, family , people I see in the store I haven’t seen in months…comment on my photos to me in person and DON”T bother to tell me on the post! I’ve actually had a hard time…self pitty moments on this subject on why they don’t LIKE it on facebook and tell me then! I’ve made a pack to myself to write back on posts..not just like…about their comment, picture etc. I’m personal like that and like the idea of this challenge. I accept hole heartedly. Paying it forward!
I am so excited to challange myself with this! I know that when I get a nice compliment, I smile from ear to ear : ) I think a lot of people now days are so afraid of giving a nice complement thinking that the other person will think they are wierd or a stalker, I know most people probably think I am a goof for actually starting a conversation with them without actually knowing them. This shall be fun!
so excited to start this challenge!
Love this idea! I will for sure be joining in
Great idea! I love comments and try to as often as I can, but there are definitely times when I take the easy route and click “like”.
This is awesome! Encouragement and kindness mean so much! I’m in too!
I love the idea its definitely a challenge but I am in too.
I will join you <3.
Sounds Like a plan!! Because a comment on the good ol’ blog always makes my day!! I shall pass it along!!

Very good, practical, nuts and bolts idea!! Thanks for sharing; I’m going to try to do it too (hence the note, not the ‘like’ button!!)
Love this! I’m in on it!!
