Staying Motivated After Relocating Your Business | By Tiffany McNutt

I think all of us who have had to move our businesses to a new town/city/county/state have worried about how it will do in the new area. I recently moved to a new city that is 10x bigger than what I am used to. With this, I have had (and still do!) have fears about how my business is going to grow in this big city. But I know that one thing has to happen: I have to STAY MOTIVATED!! I have to keep myself motivated to get out there and market myself, stick my neck out a little, try new things, and explore areas I’ve never ventured to. If you don’t stay motivated, you will close the doors on your business and hide that sweet camera high up on the shelf in the closet to collect dust. Here are some things you can do to keep yourself motivated.

-Keep your social media active

Don’t go on hiatus with your business page. Continue to show your presence to your future clients, past clients, friends and whoever else that may be looking for a photographer! Showing that you’re still connected is a MUST! Blog about another hobby you have, share a little about yourself, have a guest blogger,  write about something that relates to what you shoot, tell your clients about some products you offer, share road trip photos from your move, start a 101 in 1001…. The list can go on and on. Use your facebook page, twitter, and instagram to stay connected with everyone. The power of those things just blows my mind! Don’t give up when you are slow, there are so many things that you can do during your down time, seize the opportunity!

-Work a little harder than others

This next one might be a little bit harder for some, but it is so true! You’re going to have to work a lot harder to get your name out there. There are already business’ that are established and they have an established clientele. You are going to have to work hard to get your name out there since you are starting from the bottom again. This may mean that you have to get off of the sofa and go market yourself! You may even have to give away a few free sessions….yes I just said…. GIVE AWAY FREE SESSIONS!! I know that some of you might be shaking your head saying, “No way, lady”. But TRUST ME, just by giving away a few sessions, you can begin to form a clientele through social media, word of mouth, and online SEO visibility for your new area. Not to mention, the valuable practice and perfecting of your skills! Getting out there and shooting for free a few times is better than not at all!

-Meet other photographers!!

I am going out of my comfort zone on this by going out and meeting other local photographers in my new area. There weren’t many photographers where we lived last and where we live now, there are so many! Meeting other photographers can really help you in the long run, when you relocate your business. There are two amazing things that come from this, that I have discovered. First, you’re making a new friend in the business! You two can learn a lot from one another by bouncing ideas off of each other and even teaming up on a session. They can show you around the city and also refer clients your way. If that new friend of yours is booked for a date or an event and can’t take on that new client, they might refer that sweet new client your way, to take care of them!

Above all, when moving your business to somewhere new, don’t let it put you in a rut. Take it as a new start and an opportunity to grow. Get out there and make it happen!
