The Importance of Personal Projects | By Kathleen Clipper

Kathleen is one of my “real life friends” in addition to being a fellow photographer and P31 girl. We met several years ago when we attended the same church and even though I moved across the country we still text all the time about life and of course photography. We love to bounce ideas off of each other and brainstorm about how to push our businesses to the next level. I LOVE the fact that Kathleen takes time to photograph what she loves, and the images from her personal project always make me swoon! Be sure to check out her website to see more of her work.   -Kristin

We all have those moments when we don’t know where (or when) our next client will come. It feels like weeks and months are passing and people have forgotten about our photography. We doubt our skills. We second guess our businesses. We feel like clients don’t appreciate our “creativity” or “artsy” shots. We get discouraged. I too have been there and I remember sitting at my computer trying to find something I could do to bring my spirits back up. I made a list of what I loved: shoes, candy, movies.  And THEN I decided from that moment on, I was going to get out of the house with my camera and photograph something. Anything. For myself.

For those of you that don’t know me: I love color! If it’s bright, fun, and cheery you can bet that I am drawn to it. With my photography focus on high school-ers and fashion, it was a no brainer to carry my love for color into my brand. Want to know what was on the top of my “What I Love” list? C-O-L-O-R.  On that day, in just an hour, I had come up with a personal project that would lift my spirits back into believing in myself and loving what I do, regardless of how many clients walked through my door!
I came up with The Color Me Project.  Each shoot focuses on one color: pink, red, orange, you name it. I have a list with all the colors that I love and I am simply going down that list, focusing on one color at a time, and checking them off one by one.  It’s as simple as that!  If you are struggling with catering to each of your clients and missing out on being you or wishing you had something to photograph…anything, write down a few things you enjoy and then get out there and shoot away!  The good part? Showcasing your personal projects and shooting what you love will catch the attention of your future clients.  They’ll be filling up your inbox in no time!
